In the 2021 article "Life skills that help inside and outside of schools" author Rifka Schonfeld summarizes seven key ways to regulate one's own behavior, from the book Executive Skills in Children and Adolescents by Peg Dawson and Richard Guare:
- Planning: the ability to create a roadmap to reach a goal ... to focus only on what is important
- Organization: the ability to keep track of multiple sets of information and materials
- Time management: the ability to understand how much time one has, and to figure out how to divide it in order to meet a goal
- Working memory: the ability to hold information in mind even while performing other tasks
- Metacognition: the ability to self-monitor and recognize when you are doing something poorly or well
- Response inhibition: the ability to think before you speak or act
- Sustained attention: the ability to attend to a situation or task despite distraction, fatigue or boredom
Schonfeld continues with a list of "essential life skills" from Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs by Ellen Galinksy:
- Focus and self-control— "... focus on the 'right' information in a world full of distractions ... curb impulsive behavior ..."
- Perspective taking — "... figuring out what others think and feel ... understand other people's intentions ..."
- Communicating
- Making connections — "... putting information into different categories and understanding what is the same and what is different ..."
- Critical thinking — "... think about 'what causes what' to happen ... search for valid and reliable knowledge to guide beliefs, decisions, and actions ..."
- Taking on challenges — with "... resilience in the face of adversity ..."
- Self-directed, engaged learning
